hey if your finding you need the bowl to burn hotter you can actually try this.

pre-make 1 piece of aluminum foil with a 1/4" hole in it

after lighting and placing the coal on the foil, dome the premade foil over the the lite coal with the hole directly over the coal and seal around the bowl of the burner. this will stoke the coal.

Thanks for the comments!! Gotta love hookah talk.

Ive used this method before. I usually have to do this with the stronger, drier tobaccos, like the Nakhla tobaccos, or the apple flavor of some brands. It's nice too for adjusting the burn. As the tobacco starts to smolder out, you can move the coals in and adjust it to your needs.

thanks for the great blog man.

one variation / suggestion:

try making holes on just one side of the foil, place one burning coal on the side of the foil with holes, and only 3/4 of the coal should actually be on the bowl, rest of it sticks out to the side.

i find that this burns the tobacco slowly enough that you don't ever get a harsh taste but it gives you enough smoke. and if you have the holes only on one side, you don't get air coming in through the holes that are not covered with the coal.

when you notice the smoke is going out, make holes on the other side and do the same procedure with another coal. i find that this way i manage to burn a lot of my tobacco without the harsh taste.

if your bowl is large enough, you can even do three pieces of coal eventually. or if you feel like after the second coal, there's still tobacco in there, try putting the third piece of coal right in the middle.

hopefully this works for some people who have trouble with harsh smoke.
